about us

"To support, promote and provide an information
resource for the music of Wales."

The Welsh Music Information Centre (WMIC) aims to support and promote all genres of Welsh music. It collects and holds research scores of Welsh composers, recordings of Welsh music and reference materials, and provides an information service on music in Wales. WMIC works with other organisations in offering support to composers by encouraging, promoting and advertising performances.

The WMIC archive is accessible on-line through the website, providing an ideal opportunity for composers to provide up-to-date work lists as well as giving users a comprehensive list of the Centre's holdings. The website also advertises events, news items and opportunities, be they international competitions, performances, or educational workshops.

The Welsh Music Information Centre offers further support by encouraging performances of Welsh music both at home and abroad. Together with the Welsh Amateur Music Federation, WMIC seeks to encourage new commissions of contemporary Welsh composers, and works with the Arts Council of Wales in ensuring that the archive receives research copies of new works commissioned through the Arts Council and PRS Foundation schemes.

At the Wales Millennium Centre the WMIC runs a recording studio which is developing swiftly and welcomes a rich diversity of artists, ensembles and genres. The WMIC also publishes a number of educational booklets, such as its series of Repertoire Lists, and strives to encourage an appreciation and enjoyment of Welsh music, both within Wales and internationally through links with other music information centres worldwide.

The Welsh Music Information Centre moved, as part of Ty Cerdd-Music Centre Wales, to the Wales Millennium Centre in November 2004. A partnership between the Welsh Amateur Music Federation, Welsh Music Information Centre and National Youth Arts Wales, Ty Cerdd is a one-stop music centre, "bringing a world of music to Wales and the music of Wales to the world."

The Welsh Music Information Centre is resident at the Wales Millennium Centre, as part of Tŷ Cerdd. The WMIC became part of Tŷ Cerdd-Music Centre Wales in 2000. Also home to the Welsh Amateur Music Federation, National Youth Arts Wales and Cyfansoddwyr Cymru (Composers of Wales), Tŷ Cerdd is a one-stop music centre, “bringing a world of music to Wales and the music of Wales to the world.”

The Welsh Music Information Centre is currently at a very exciting stage of its development with new projects, a new home and new facilities (including a larger library, listening booths and a recording studio). With all this in its future, and with continued support from the Arts Council of Wales, the Welsh Music Information Centre is looking forward to making an even greater contribution to music in Wales.
