The International Association of Music
Information Centres (IAMIC) is a worldwide network of
organisations which document and promote the music of their
various countries. The reach of the network is wide, with 43
members internationally (2006) in 38 different countries.
IAMIC provides each music information centre with access to a
world of music and possibilities for collaboration on a global
scale. Each year a conference is held, hosted by one of the
member countries (USA 2005, Sweden 2006, New Zealand 2007).
During this meeting, members discuss opportunities, projects
and issues of a common concern, both in formal meetings and in
networking during social time.
Each music information centre representative
advocates the musical activity, promoters and practitioners of
their own country, and all members work together to facilitate
collaboration overseas. For the relatively modest Welsh Music
Information Centre, membership of the IAMIC network has
contributed significantly to its development over the last
three years and has helped to foster an international context
for music in Wales.
In September 2005, the Welsh Music Information
Centre put forward a successful presentation bid to host the
IAMIC conference in Wales in 2008. We are delighted to be
providing a platform for Welsh culture and will use this
opportunity to encourage international interest in musical
life throughout Wales.
Conference
The annual IAMIC conference is the largest and most important
of the IAMIC meetings. Its week long activities provide an
opportunity for international exchange, both between the
member countries, and with other cultural organisations and
groups taking part from the host country. It enables cultural
organisations wishing to join the IAMIC network to gain an
insight into the collaborations and projects taking place
within this international organisation, and allows the members
to continue their development of the collaborative
international projects currently in progress.
